Wellesley Ave at Great Plain Ave Reconstruction Project

Re-imagine a new Great Plain Avenue rotary in Wellesley.

Reconstruction on the Wellesley Avenue at Great Plain Avenue rotary reconstruction project began in late July 2020. Work on the roadway also includes the Rice Street intersection to Brook Street intersection, and Brook Street to the Fuller Brook Road intersection. The project is expected to be completed in May 2021.

Project Update for December 2020

Work on the Great Plain Avenue rotary is nearing completion. The area, including approach roads and the Great Plain Avenue and Brook Street intersection, are in the final roadway layout configurations.  Roads within the project limits have been paved with a hot mix asphalt binder course or milled. As part of the project, new sidewalks have been installed and paved with a hot mix asphalt binder course, ADA accessible ramps are in place, and and granite curbing work is mostly completed.  Temporary painted line markings have been installed on the roadway pavement.

Most of the major project work has shut down for the winter months, although some work will continue in the coming weeks to install street signs and street lights in the area. Message boards and other signs alerting traffic to the new patterns will continue through the winter.

In the early Spring of 2021 as weather permits, the contractor will resume work to complete paving the top course of roadways, sidewalks, and driveway aprons. Permanent thermoplastic paving markings will be installed on the roads, and will include markings for bicycle lanes. The area will also be loamed, seeded and landscaped.

The roadway improvements also include pavement milling and overlay, new pavement markings, bicycle lanes, and a street lights within the rotary area.
