Project update for September 20, 2021

ROADWAY Milling September 26th through 28th

The Department of Public Works would like to provide an update on the Grove Street Reconstruction project.  Work is progressing on schedule and the roadway milling work is scheduled for Sunday night September 26th thru Tuesday night September 28th, subject to acceptable weather conditions. Work will take place on Grove Street between Spring Street and the Needham Town Line.  Work hours will be between the hours of 8:00 PM and 5:00 AM. Police details will be on-site during the work hours.  Detours and detour signage will be setup on Grove Street during work periods and access to Grove Street will be limited.

Project Update for September 2021

The Grove Street Reconstruction project is ongoing. The curbing work between Benvenue St and Spring St has been completed. The sidewalk work is ongoing between Beard Way and Spring St. and the contractor is presently installing concrete wheel chair ramps at all crosswalk locations within the street intersections. Once these ramps are completed the sidewalk will be repaved with a final top course.

Work to realign the Dover Rd intersection continues. The Town is waiting for Comcast and Verizon to relocate their utility lines off the old poles and onto the new poles. Once this work is completed, the old poles will be removed.

The Town is expecting night work between the hours of 8PM to 5AM during the last 2-3 nights of September. This work will involve pavement milling in which 2 inches of the old pavement surface will be ground off creating temporary shallow ridges in the underlying pavement. The ridges will then be paved at a later date in October.  The milling work will involve large heavy machinery and dump trucks and will require road closures during the operations.

Please continue to anticipate sidewalk closures and traffic delays. Police details will be present to help with vehicle and pedestrian traffic.  Please give yourself extra travel time or use alternate routes if possible while traveling in this area.

Project Update for August 2021

Curbing work between Benvenue St and Spring Street is nearing completion. The Dover Rd intersection realignment, roadway and sidewalk work between Benvenue St and the Needham Town line will continue into September. Please anticipate sidewalk closures as work is still in progress.   Police details will be present to help with vehicle traffic.  Please allow for extra travel time or use alternative routes if possible while traveling in this area.

A number of proposed improvements are included in the project. The Grove Street and Dover Road intersection will be realigned so that Dover Road intersects Grove Street almost perpendicularly, requiring vehicles approaching Grove Street from Dover Road to come to a full stop before entering Grove Street.

Work will also include the installation of granite and bituminous curbing, along with hot mix asphalt sidewalks, cement concrete wheelchair ramps to meet current ADA standards, modifications to the roadway drainage system, cross walks, and new signs. Other improvements are pavement milling and overlay and bicycle markings. The Town will construct a new sidewalk on the east side of Grove Street from Longmeadow Road to Beard Way

The work is being done by Lorusso Corporation and their subcontractors, under the direction of the Town of Wellesley Department of Public Works.

A majority of the construction work will take place Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Paving, milling and line-striping work will be performed between the hours of 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM sometime late summer or early fall. Police details will be onsite during the project to minimize impacts to traffic and other roadway functions. Two lane traffic will be maintained throughout the majority of the project, although, there may be lane closures and shifts to provide ample construction area for the contractor to perform the work. Night work will require roadway closures. For the safety of the roadway workers and to minimize traffic in the area, please consider using alternative routes during construction hours.
