The Committee works with municipal departments, residents, businesses, institutions, and civic organizations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainability.
Wellesley has a goal adopted by Town Meeting in 2021 to reduce town-wide greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050 with interim targets to reduce these emissions 50% below a 2007 baseline by 2030 and 75% below the 2007 baseline by 2040. Wellesley's Climate Action Plan provides a roadmap for meeting these goals.
Wellesley met two previous town-wide greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals for 2013 (a 10% reduction below the 2007 baseline) and 2020 (a 25% reduction below the 2007 baseline).
The Climate Action Committee consists of 7 members. The Select Board, the Municipal Light Board and the School Committee each appoint one member. These members may be a board member, officer, official or paid employee and may be a non-resident of the Town. The Select Board also appoint the remaining four members from residents active in the Town's volunteer sustainable energy initiatives or others who bring relevant expertise, such as knowledge about sustainable energy practices, marketing, or community engagement.
