National Preparedness Month – Are You Ready?
Submitted by Michael Carmody, DPW Safety Coordinator
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) describes National Preparedness Month as “an observance each September to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time.” FEMA’s ready.gov webpage provides information to help families, communities, and organizations be ready for just about every type of emergency and disaster. There are educational tools for young children, and students.
There are dozens of documents available free to order by mail or download. Documents can assist with preparedness actions, including for specific types of events. There is an Emergency Financial First Aid Kit (EFFAK) to organize critical financial and other personal information if a disaster strikes. There is also a handbook for those interested in being a citizen responder through the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program.
The webpage ready.gov offers information on seasonal events such as heat, drought and lightning in the summer, and information for making a plan to keep your family safe in case of an emergency or disaster. The FEMA app for cellphones provides alerts, plans, and tools for recovery, including FEMA contacts for disaster assistance.
Though we may never be emotionally prepared for an emergency, having the right tools can help us quickly take charge and take the necessary actions to protect ourselves, our families, and our community.
