The Sumner Tunnel in Boston will be completely closed for 8-weeks beginning in July 2023.
Currently, the tunnel, which takes drivers from Logan Airport to I-93/Boston, is closed on weekends from 11:00 p.m. on Friday night until 5:00 a.m. on Monday morning. The full closure will be seven days a week, from Wednesday, July 5 through Thursday, August 31 and is part of an ongoing Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) tunnel restoration project.
After nearly 100 years of service, the Sumner Tunnel (Route 1A South) needs significant improvements. MassDOT will be working on tunnel safety, the roadway surface, the tunnel ceiling, lighting & security systems, and cell phone, GPS, and radio service inside the tunnel. Full closure of the tunnel is needed to get this work done.
A second full closure is planned next summer from July 2024 through August 2024.
These closures will impact regional traffic and Logan Airport. For weekly project email updates, travel options, and construction progress sign up here. For questions, email the project team at Sumner100@dot.state.ma
Please note: The Sumner Tunnel will be open on Memorial Day weekend (May 27-29), the weekend of June 24-25, and July 1-4.
