Hunnewell students, teachers, staff, and families celebrated the official ribbon cutting for the new Hunnewell School on Monday, February 26, 2024.
It was a day filled with cheers, excitement, and awe as K-5 grade classes gathered outside for a brief ceremony before walking through the front doors of their new school.
Wellesley Public Schools and Town officials, Permanent Building Committee members, representatives from the building architecture and design firm SMMA, and contractor W.T. Rich also attended the celebration.
"Today we mark the transition of Hunnewell from a building project to a school building," said WPS Superintendent of Schools Dr. David Lussier, as the crowd clapped.
The old Hunnewell School closed on June 22, 2022 after 83-years of educating students within its walls. The new, state-of-the-art school is LEED compliant with soaring ceilings and windows to maximize natural lighting, all electric systems except for an emergency diesel generator, natural surfaces, energy efficient lighting and appliances, and other details as specified in the Town's Municipal Sustainable Building Guidelines.
Public tours of the new Hunnewell School are planned for May 17-19 during Wellesley's Wonderful Weekend.
