[ARCHIVED] Safely View the Solar Eclipse on April 8

Solar Eclipse

For the solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, Wellesley will see near totality, or about 93%, which will partially darken the sky in the afternoon. The weather forecast is predicted to be good for those who want to experience this unique event!

For the eclipse, the moon will partly cover the sun beginning at 2:15 p.m. and ending at 4:29 p.m. Locally, our community will experience partial darkness that will peak at 3:29 p.m.

BE SAFE. As the eclipse will happen while many of us are out and about and while students are leaving school and heading home, DO NOT look at the sun at any time during the eclipse without special eye protection.

  • Eclipse glasses should have a special solar filter to block the sun's harmful UV and infrared rays, allowing only a limited amount of visible light to reach the eyes. Use eclipse glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2 standard to ensure sufficient protection.
  • Only view the sun with these special eclipse glasses or solar viewers. Regular sunglasses are NOT SAFE for viewing the eclipse.
  • It is NOT SAFE to look at the sun through a camera lens (including cell phone cameras), telescopes, binoculars, or any other device without specialized and certified lens filters.
  • It is also NOT SAFE to wear eclipse glasses or use a handheld solar viewer and use camera lenses, telescopes, binoculars, or any other device without specialized filters as the concentrated solar rays will burn through and may cause serious eye injuries.
