You're Invited! Come celebrate the community Grand Opening of Hunnewell School on Saturday, May 18 and tour the new K-5 facility!
As part of Wellesley's Wonderful Weekend, join Town and School officials for a brief dedication ceremony at 10:00 a.m., and from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. take a self-guided tour of the building and learn more about the design and construction process.
Wellesley Public Schools will have information for residents and will show a video featuring additional details about the new net zero-ready building, the first in Wellesley. After a tour, stop by the Climate Action Committee table to learn how you can make your own home more sustainable.
The new Hunnewell School opened on February 26 when students returned from February break. The 76,500 square foot, 18-classroom school is designed to serve approximately 365 students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
During 18 months of construction, Hunnewell students and teachers were distributed by grade level to four of Wellesley’s other elementary schools – Bates, Hardy, Sprague and Upham.
Hunnewell School is the first of two schools being built in Wellesley as part of a project to replace the aging and obsolete Hardy, Hunnewell, and Upham elementary schools. A new Hardy School is currently under construction and scheduled to open in August.
Funding for the new Hunnewell and Hardy schools was approved by Town Meeting and by Wellesley voters in a December 2021 debt exclusion.
The School Committee and Wellesley Public Schools are grateful to the thousands of residents who supported the construction of both Hunnewell and Hardy. We're proud to share this first completed project with the community!
