[ARCHIVED] Stay Cool in the Heat

Thermometer-and-sun-heat-1200x1336

High heat is coming.

With exceptionally hot weather predicted to begin on Tuesday afternoon, June 18 through Friday, June 21, the Wellesley Health Department is sharing tips and information to help people and pets stay cool and safe.

  • Slow down and refrain from doing strenuous activity outdoors. If you must be outdoors, limit activity to morning and evening hours if possible. Rest often. Wear sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Drink plenty of cool liquids (non-alcoholic and non-caffeinated) and lots of water, even if you don't feel thirsty.
  • If you don't have air conditioning, stay on your lowest floor, out of the sun. Use fans and avoid turning on your stove and oven.
  • Close curtains or blinds that face the sun.
  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Take a cool shower, bath, or sponge bath if you feel overheated.
  • NEVER leave children or pets unattended in a car, even with the windows open, and don't leave pets outside for extended periods. Remember that pavement can get very hot and burn hands, feet, and paws.

Check on family, friends and neighbors, especially older adults, those who live alone, or those who may not have air conditioning.

Heat Exhaustion & Heat Stroke
Understand the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke. If you notice signs, act fast!

Heat Exhaustion signs: Dizziness, Thirst, Cool/Pale/Clammy Skin, Heavy Sweating, Nausea, Weakness

If someone is experiencing these symptoms, move them to a cooler area, loosen clothing, give sips of cool water, and seek medical help if symptoms don't improve.

Heat Stroke signs: Confusion, Dizziness, Becoming Unconscious

If someone is experiencing these symptoms, call 9-1-1 immediately. Move person to a cooler area, loosen clothing and remove extra layers, cool with water or ice. Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment isn't received.
