Hot, humid weather is continuing into August. The Fire Department and Health Department are sharing reminders to help people and pets keep cool and stay safe.
- Slow down and refrain from doing strenuous activity outdoors. If you must be outdoors, limit activity to morning and evening hours if possible. Rest often. Wear sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat.
- Drink plenty of cool liquids (non-alcoholic and non-caffeinated) and lots of water, even if you don't feel thirsty.
- If you don't have air conditioning, stay on your lowest floor, out of the sun. Use fans and avoid turning on your stove and oven.
- Close curtains or blinds that face the sun.
- Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
- Take a cool shower, bath, or sponge bath if you feel overheated.
- NEVER leave children or pets unattended in a car, even with the windows open, and don't leave pets outside for extended periods. Remember that pavement can get very hot and burn hands, feet, and paws.
Check on family, friends and neighbors, especially older adults, those who live alone, or those who may not have air conditioning.
