Add some color to our community - transform Wellesley traffic signal boxes into public art!

In an effort to enhance the visual experience for Town residents and visitors, the Wellesley Public Art Committee (PAC) is working with the Wellesley Police Department on the Electrical Box Art Program.

In the third round of this program, the PAC and the Police Department are inviting local artists - both amateur and professional - and art and educational institutions to paint boxes this spring.

Seven electrical boxes were painted last year and now have new looks thanks to the creativity of local artists selected by the committee and Town officials. The completed box at Linden Street and Crest Road is an example of one of the designs.  Electrical art.Linden

Three more boxes along Wellesley's high traffic areas are ready for makeovers. The locations are:

  • Washington Street at Forest Street
  • Washington Street at Seward Road
  • Linden Street at Kingsbury Street

Selected artists will receive a $1,000 stipend for their time, transportation, and supplies. Painting will be done later this spring and completed by July 31, 2021.

The application period for the Electrical Box Art Program is now open. All proposals must be received by April 15, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. and may be emailed to wellesleycap@gmail.com or delivered as hardcopies to the Wellesley Police Department, in care of Chief Jack Pilecki.

Program details, eligibility criteria, and comprehensive proposal information are in the Spring 2021 Electrical Box Art Program announcement.
