[ARCHIVED] Illegal Mountain Bike Trails Damage Town Land

News Logo

fbp2The Town of Wellesley needs your help to protect public land.

Town officials have received numerous complaints throughout this year about un-sanctioned mountain bike trails. These trails are being constructed without approval in multiple locations. In addition to being illegal, they are unsafe, are impacting the landscape, and are a drain on limited Town resources.

Informal trails create the following:

  • Damage to vegetation and composition
  • Compacted soil Erosion
  • Mud
  • Water filled with silt and sediment
  • Wildlife disturbance
  • Dangerous trail conditions
  • Expensive restoration and repair costs

Open space resources serve many functions and provide countless benefits to everyone in our community. Our trails system is intended to provide alternative transportation, but these illegal bike trails are arguably more dangerous especially with users traveling at the highest speeds.  fbp1IMG_3772

Many of these resources are very delicate and include areas protected under wetland protection rules or conservation status. Illegal trails are destroying them!

Please enjoy the recreation opportunities offered by our parks without disturbing the landscape. Notices have been posted in specific affected areas.

The Wellesley Select Board, Natural Resources Commission, and Police Department are investigating complaints about illegal trails. Jumps will be dismantled and debris will be cleared and removed; residents may face fines.

There are many dedicated mountain bike sites close to Wellesley.  Visit the New England Mountain Bike Association website for more information.
