The Wellesley School Committee recently dedicated a plaque to the Mulcahy family, early settlers to Wellesley, honoring the family's historic impact on our Town.
The family's sale of approximately 10 acres of farmland to the Town in 1947 allowed for the construction of what was then Wellesley Junior High School, now called Wellesley Middle School, and the establishment of recreation space for students and the community.
The original Mulcahy Farm was located on what is now the eastern side of Sprague Fields.
Several members of the Mulcahy family attended the dedication ceremony. Bob Mulcahy, now a Vermont resident, led the effort and worked with the School Committee to donate the plaque and have it installed. Other family members involved included Bob's brother Charlie Mulcahy, cousins Kevin and MaryEllen Mulcahy, and Marie Mulcahy, widow of cousin John Mulcahy.
The Wellesley Historical Commission and Planning Department helped draft the plaque language and research information on the family. Installation was done by the Department of Public Works.
Also attending the dedication were School Committee members Linda Chow and Christina Horner, and Historical Commission member Odessa Sanchez.
