[ARCHIVED] Wrong Way Driver on Route 9 Ends in Traffic Crash

Traffic Crash Route 9 East at Upwey Road

The Wellesley Police Department is investigating a two car crash on Route 9 that occurred in the early morning hours of December 15, 2017.

At five minutes past midnight, multiple 911 calls were received by the Wellesley Police Department Emergency Communications Center reporting a traffic crash and a wrong way driver on Route 9 eastbound near Upwey Road.  A Wellesley Police Officer on a paid detail at Rt. 9 and Kingsbury Street immediately responded to the scene and began rendering assistance along with a Norfolk County Deputy Sheriff.

Officers found two vehicles with significant damage on Route 9.  One of the drivers was trapped in his car due to the amount of damage.  The second driver was able to get out of the car.  The Wellesley Fire Department utilized the jaw of life to extricate the trapped driver.  Once removed, the driver was transported to Beth Israel (BI) in Boston by ambulance.  The second driver was also transported to the BI as well.  The injuries to both drivers do not appear to be life threatening at this time.

Route 9 eastbound was closed for a period of time due to the severity of the crash.  The temperature at the time of the crash was approximately 16 degrees.

A full investigation of the crash is underway by Sergeant Mike Lemenager and Officer Mark D’Innocenzo.  Preliminary findings indicate that one vehicle was traveling the wrong way on Route 9, going westbound in the eastbound lanes of travel prior to the crash occurring.  The second vehicle was travelling eastbound in the eastbound lane when the head on collision occurred.
