North 40 Property

In December 2014, the Town of Wellesley purchased 46 acres of land from Wellesley College for $35 million. The area is commonly known as the "North 40" and is adjacent to the College. Under the purchase agreement, at least half of this land will be preserved in perpetuity as open space with a focus on sustainability, in order to provide the most positive impact on neighborhoods and Town services.

Discussions about the future of the North 40 are the responsibility of the Select Board, with significant contributions from other Town Boards and Committees, including the Community Preservation Committee (CPC) which funded a portion of the land purchase with Community Preservation Act money. Currently, the Select Board is working with CPC to draft and finalize a Conservation Restriction (CR) for a portion of the North 40 that will include details about land jurisdiction and allowed use.

This work will involve considerable input and engagement from the Wellesley community. Please watch for information on public hearings about this topic in the coming months.
