Hunnewell Sport Courts Restoration Project

Work completed last week included the installation of fencing and gates around the courts, final paving of the parking lot, and pavement markings. With these tasks finished, the project has reached substantial completion, and the courts are now ready for use.

The Department of Public Works (DPW) will continue working with our contractor, M.J. Cataldo, to complete a short punch list of remaining items, including:

Installation of the bounce wall

Placement of the pickleball net on the rear court

Installation of signage on the fence

The asphalt binder and final top course layers have been successfully placed on the courts. To date, more than 1,200 tons (approximately 2.4 million pounds) of asphalt and 15 cubic yards of concrete have been installed.

The top course requires a 14-day curing period before seal coating and painting can begin.

During this curing phase, the following installations will take place:

  • New water line to the drinking fountain
  • Fence mesh and railings
  • Parking lot curbing
  • Tennis backboard

The seal coating and painting process, which takes approximately 7–8 days, is scheduled to begin the week of September 29.

All heavy construction activities are expected to be completed by the end of September, with overall project completion forecasted for mid-October.



Update August 14th:

The interior construction is underway and progressing well. 88 fence posts have been installed, and the perimeter concrete curb has been completed. Next, the subbase will be leveled, and the asphalt binder will be placed. Surrounding infrastructure, including an electrical cabinet at the rear side of the courts, will be replaced, and the new water line to the new water station will be installed. The anticipated completion of the project is set to be in late September or early October. Please see pictures of the progress that has been made so far.

The Hunnewell Sport Courts restoration project will begin on the week of June 16, 2025. The project involves the reclamation and reconstruction of the existing tennis courts, parking lot, construction of accessible pedestrian pathways, installation of site amenities associated with the tennis courts, including all required demolition and site work, and installation of identified site amenities.

The project will take approximately 90 days to complete.

The daytime work hours are Monday – Friday 7:00am to 3:00pm.

Please anticipate parking lot closure during construction.
